Abstract

This article discusses Batavia during the Dutch rule starting from a brief history before the name change. Batavia became one of the important areas during the VOC era with its trading port. This region was projected to be the center of Java's trade in the era of Jan Pieterszoon Coen 1619-1629. Batavia or previously known as Jayakarta was built by Fatahillah before finally experiencing a significant increase in the social and economic sectors during the reign of J.P Coen. The development of Batavia also had an impact on aspects such as the architecture and functionality of buildings, changes in the essence of Batavia into an international port city, the transfer of trade offices from Maluku to Batavia, and also the increasing Dutch relations with traders and migrants from China.
