Abstract

Cultuurstelsel or Forced cropping system, this is a regulation issued by Governor-General Johannes van den Bosch in 1830. The main motive for the Forced cropping system (Cultuurstelsel) in 1830 was due to the financial difficulties faced by the Dutch government as a result of the Java war of 1825-1830. The main purpose of the Forced cropping system was to fill the empty Dutch government treasury or close the Dutch government's budget deficit. This study aims to explain the implementation of the Forced cropping system in the Dutch East Indies and the impact of forced cultivation on people in the Dutch East Indies. This research uses historical methods consisting of five stages, namely topic selection, heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The first to do is heuristics (source collection). Then, verification (criticism) is carried out externally and internally. The next step is interpretation with the aim of interpreting the data that has been obtained and understanding the relationship between historical data. The last step is historiography by compiling research results in the form of articles.
